CLEVELAND HEIGHTS -- A California couple and their "humanitarian debt" ministry have been indicted by Cuyahoga County prosecutors for stealing more than $36,000 from a city woman in a mortgage-fraud scheme. James Pilon. 63 and his wife Verna Simms-Pilon. 54 direct Owe No One International Ministry in Sonora. Calif. which claims to back up "God's People" pay off their mortgages. In November. 2006 ministry representatives contacted the victim. 54 about enrolling in the mortgage accelerated program. They claimed they would pay off her home owe which is around $80,000 in around six months. According to prosecutor's office the woman feared lapsing into a fail on her mortgage so she agreed to participate. The Pilon's required $1,500 to enroll in the program and then required the woman to make change contributions of more than $36,000 to a general fund that the Pilons said would be used to pay off the mortgages of others who had fallen behind on their accommodate payments. According to prosecutors the Pilons only made one owe payment pocketing most of the money for themselves. The Pilons were indicted on one count of theft by deception a third-degree felony and one count of telecommunications fraud a fourth degree felony. Their arraignment is scheduled for Sept. 21.
